Message from the President

With the flurry of activities of July, culminating in the end of the Swim and Dive
Team seasons, we are now decidedly into the dog days of summer. The pool is usually
very quiet in August. What better place to spend your leisure hours than keeping cool
and having a barbeque down at Glenwood The grills are for everyone’s use. We only ask
that you clean them after each use.

Congratulations to our Name the Newsletter Contest Winner, Jon Watkins! More
than 25 entries were submitted. Many thanks to all who participated!

Even though some of our senior guards and assistant managers are going back to
school before the end of the month, we are committed to keeping our normal operating
hours until the end of the season by filling in with temporary staff, so you may see some
new faces.

As always, please let us know how we can enhance your membership at
Glenwood. See you at the pool!

~Bruce Lupin, Board President

Renovation Update

We submitted our financial reports for this season (up to August 1) to Sandy
Spring Bank and met on the financing for Phase 2 of our renovation (new pool
construction). Our loan officer reacted very positively to our financials and has put
together a package for the senior loan officer at the bank recommending the final
approval for Phase 2 financing. We expect to hear a final decision with details on the
interest rate etc., by August 25th.

Assuming we receive approval from the bank, we plan to begin construction the
week of September 9th. Please see the Grounds section below related to volunteers
needed the weekend of September 6th to help get everything (chairs, tables, etc.) cleared
out for the construction company. The plan is for the construction to be completed by the
second week of December. If the schedule slips, we have all of Spring to finish up.

Grounds Update

The most recent additions to Glenwood are a new covered sandbox adjacent to the
baby pool and fluorescent lighting in Snack Bar pavilion.

You may have noticed the mid-summer arrival of several blue Montgomery
County Recycling Bins. I want to recognize Jan Bussler for taking the initiative to help
us be more environmentally friendly at Glenwood. A great job and a worthy cause!

Please mark your calendars to join us in the weekend of September 6 to assist in
storing our furniture and other pool equipment and relocating the perimeter pool-area
stones and flagstone from the check in area that we want to keep before commencing
with the Phase II renovation project this fall. Details to follow.

As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions on how we can continually
improve the pool and would love to hear from you at tdurkin@NEBFINVEST.ORG.

~Tim “The Grounds Guy” Durkin

Membership Update

I am happy to report that we’ve reached well over 95% of our 2003 Membership
Goal of 475.

Our ‘bounty program’ — offering a book of guest passes to each GRC member
who recruits a new member — is paying dividends. If you haven’t picked up your
tickets, they are waiting at the front desk!

In addition, our Second Half of Summer Sale was a great success, bringing in
another batch of members who have joined us in late July or August. We especially
thank Martha Kaiser for going above and beyond in new member recruiting.

If you have any friends or neighbors interested in next summer, they can join now
by paying next year’s initiation and get the end of summer as well as be in on next
summer’s festivities. We will be starting a waiting list after the summer is over.
Applications will be on the website, at www.glenwoodpool.com.

~Ed Finn, Vice President

Events Update

Mark your calendars now for a special End of Summer Bash, as we prepare to
say goodbye to the ‘old’ pool. Join us on Labor Day Weekend, Sunday, August 31, 2:00
– 6:00, for music, food and fun. If you are interested in helping the day run smoothly,
please volunteer your time by contacting Pool Manager Stacey Gibney. (Rain Date:
Monday, September 1)

July was a busy month for social events at Glenwood. The month started with our
48th annual 4th of July Celebration. The spirit of competition abounded during several
races, the featured belly flop contest and, of course, the greased watermelon push. Sandy
Kweder, and her army of volunteers, deserve a round of applause.

The Glenwood Swim and Dive Team hosted its annual Family Social and Dance
on Saturday, July 19. Thanks goes to event co-chairs Meg Lupin and Kathy Levintow.

The annual Glenwood Crab and Chicken Feast, a decades-old tradition, went
off with fun for all on Saturday, July 26 and well into Sunday morning. More than 100
were in attendance. Special thanks to Leah Havener for her tireless work in organizing
and the several volunteers who helped out.
