Renovation Update from the President

As you read this issue of The Glenwood Gazette, we are entering the final stages
of our Phase II renovation. Again, I am happy to report that we remain on schedule to
complete the construction of a brand new pool in time to open on Saturday, May 29.
And, did I mention it will be heated?!? That’s right, the heater is on site and ready to
provide us with a full summer of comfortable water temperatures.

It has been an incredible journey, dating back to the formation of the Renovation
Committee back in the spring of 2001. An untold number of Glenwood members have
been integral to the success of this project. The Glenwood community has really come
together to secure the next fifty years of the Glenwood Recreation Club, Inc.

You can view a full pictorial chronology, including the latest photos, of the entire
project since early last fall at www.glenwoodpool.com.

We can really use your help getting the place ready, so please be sure to stop by
during one of our upcoming spring cleaning / work weekends (see Grounds Update
below).

~Bruce Lupin, Board President

Grounds Update

Please mark the next two weekends on your calendar to help Glenwood prepare to
open its doors on our brand new pool. Glenwood has a long-standing tradition of
member involvement in the “spring cleaning” process.

Specific tools needed include:

  • Flat-edge Shovels

At the Annual Meeting, I announced the formation of an elite grounds
improvement and maintenance team, to be known as the “GlenDogs.” I’ll be scheduling
periodic Glendog work-days this summer; we’ll tackle a wide variety of projects and can
use your help if you’ve got special work skills and/or just like getting dirty.

To join Team Glendog, please take 30 seconds to join a special pool improvement
committee list-serve by sending an email to: glendogs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Feel free to forward your questions or ideas to me at tdurkin@nebfinvest.org.

HELP WANTED:

The GRC Board of Directors WANTS YOU to be the next Snack Bar
Coordinator. Duties include training the young pool members who staff the snack bar
and and organizing volunteers to maintain inventory. For details, please contact Board
President Bruce Lupin at blupin1@yahoo.com or 301/589-6225.

Help Wanted, Part II

Glenwood is in need of a “new-ish” personal computer for the new Membership
check-in process. While we have budgeted to purchase one, if you have a computer
sitting in a closet after an upgrade, please let us know. We need a newer model PC with
a significant amount of disk space, a decent monitor, and preferably a newer version of
Windows. If you have one you would be willing to part with, email Ed Finn at
ejf2107@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Meet our New Dive Team Coach: Sandra Holmberg

Our new dive coach, Sandra Holmberg, brings years of top flight diving and
coaching experience to the Glenwood Tigers Dive Team.

Sandra was a diver through college, and the captain of the University of
Louisville varsity dive team in 1997 and 1998. She worked as a springboard dive coach
at the Cardinal Diving Club in Louisville, KY in 1998 and 1998.

After getting her B.A. from Louisville, she embarked on a two year stint in the
Peace Corps in sub-Sahara west Africa, followed by another two years in west Africa for
a non-governmental organization. She has been an educational volunteer, a trainer and a
project coordinator in Senegal, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

Sandra is currently a graduate student in an MA in Education program at George
Washington University, and is an intern teaching ESOL classes in the Montgomery
County Public Schools. We are looking forward to a great dive team summer with
Sandra.

County Approves Sidewalks for Gardiner Avenue

Thanks to the persistent efforts of GRC members Susan and David Cosca,
Montgomery County has issued final approval to install a sidewalk along Gardiner
Avenue between Hayden and Churchill. This new sidewalk will increase pedestrian
safety along this route, especially those who walk to Glenwood during the summer
months from points north.

While no official time table is set, the County has stated that it hopes to complete
the project this summer.

Board Meeting Highlights: April 12, 2004

In response to member feedback at the Annual Meeting, we institute this new
standing feature of The Gazette.

1. Membership Report: Eight terminations, since last summer, all from families who
are moving out of the area. Twenty-nine new members since last summer, with six
telephone inquiries pending.

2. Front Desk Procedures: A new system for club entrance will go into effect for
2004. Each of pool member, including children, will have their own card with a
unique number on it as well as a barcode.   Individuals must present their member card
at the front desk.  The barcode on the card will be read and pop up the member’s
photograph and information.  If the member does not have the card at the time, he or
she may state their member number or name and the photo check will be used.

3. Renovation Progress: (See also the report above.) The Board discussed options for
placement of the basketball/hard court, including:
* The new raised area (former volleyball area) is not a good site for basketball
because of the rocky drop-off on two sides
* For this summer, we will install a hoop in the upper parking lot
* We will consider other options over the summer, such as to reconfigure the hill
and terrace area near the pool entry, where there is much unused space
* We will monitor concerns about creating a basketball play area outside of the pool
fenced area attracting non-members to it were discussed.

4. Operations: Dan McNickle and Pool Manager Stacey Gibney have hired nearly all
life guards for 2004. Steve Butts and John Lewis have been hired as Assistant Pool
Managers. Stacey, Steve and John will schedule special training for all guards for
managing the new layout of the pool.

5. Pool Events: We are still hoping to have an informal Open House on May 2, so that
pool members and others in the neighborhood can check out our progress and ask
questions.
